Hollowed Out Log

Felt like a hollowed out log every morning
Decaying on the old forest floor
She said “Give me your poor and your hungry”
Not “I don’t want to see you no more”

Somebody’s building a wall in between them
Built up inch by inch over time
He’d rather try to deny his involvement
But he just bought some mortar and lime

He said “I like the sound of your voice”
She said “Thanks” and kept on brushing her hair
He felt flat and got scared and fell silent
But didn’t know how to get out of there

She said “I just need some alone time”
He didn’t think that she meant for years
That wall that had built up so slowly
Filled with slights and desires and fears

Takes a small flame to light a real big fire
A new name to light up her face
Been a long time coming, trying to keep up
But time has been called on that race

He said “I like the sound of your voice”
She said “Thanks” and kept on playing her guitar
He felt flat and got scared and fell silent
Don’t know if he can make it on out of the bar
He felt flat and got scared and fell silent
Don’t know if he can make it on out of the bar
