Hear the moan of the train in the nighttime
And the clatter of its silvery hooves
Wonder how far south it is going
Are the tracks clear all the way through?
Seen the train from a hundred miles distant
Had a ticket in my ragged winter coat
Half of me wanted to throw it away
The other half bent down to pick it up
You know luck can be kind of one sided
When one gets the ring and one not
But if you don’t make good time to the station
The train will move on as you watch
We are built at the dawn of the ages
Most of us take just what we get
But some of us don’t agree with the gods
And we want a reprieve from all that
There’s a flesh and blood girl in the bedroom
There’s a black and white bible on the shelf
There are no words inside it that say that it’s wrong
To become what you know is your self
You know luck can be kind of one sided
When one gets the ring and one not
But if you don’t make good time to the station
The train will move on as you watch
The past is only worth a few pennies
All the money’s on just what comes next
I’d spend a million dollars just to find out
How to keep my heart beating like this
Hear the moan of the train in the nighttime
And the clatter of its silvery hooves
I stare at the beam of the headlight
As it bounces off me onto you
